Lumber & BUILDING MATERIALS
Houma, LA
Houma grew where bayous, roads, and working communities came together. Downtown developed around
the courthouse, churches, shops, and businesses that served families throughout Terrebonne Parish, while the
surrounding area grew through sugar, fishing, oilfield work, shipbuilding, and generations of small local businesses.
Houma was established as Terrebonne Parish's seat in 1834, chosen for its location at the convergence of six bayous
and its access to commerce and development.
That mix of old and new is still visible across Houma. Historic homes sit near newer neighborhoods. Family
businesses share streets with industrial shops, offices, schools, and churches. From Southdown and Broadmoor
to Bayou Cane, Village East, Mechanicville, and Grand Caillou, familiar landmarks like the old Airbase and the
Houma Tunnel help tell the story of a community shaped by water, work, transportation, and constant change.
Frost Lumber is part of that South Louisiana building tradition, serving Houma and Terrebonne Parish from
our yard in Thibodaux. The route between the two communities follows the Highway 24 corridor
A Lil’ Lagniappe...
This Works Progress Administration photograph shows Church Street in downtown Houma
during a street-paving project in the 1930s. The completed section ran from Verret Street to
School Street as part of a larger effort to improve roads throughout the city.
The image captures Houma at a point when familiar downtown streets were being reshaped
for a growing community. Utility poles line the road, homes and buildings sit close to the street,
and the fresh pavement marks a shift toward the city Houma was becoming.
Much of downtown Houma’s historic character remains visible today, including buildings and
streets that have continued serving the community through decades of growth, storms, and change.
Houma has never been afraid to rebuild the road while keeping sight of where it came from.
