Gray, LA

Gray sits along Highway 24 between Houma and Thibodaux, close enough to both that people often pass through without realizing when one community ends and the next begins. But Gray has its own history, its own landmarks, and deep ties to the beginnings of Terrebonne Parish.

This marker stands at Halfway Cemetery in Gray, near the place where Henry Schuyler Thibodaux

died at his plantation in 1827. Born in New York in 1769, he became a prominent Louisiana

political figure and briefly served as acting governor in 1824.

The marker calls him the “Father of Terrebonne Parish,” recognizing his role in the parish’s

early formation. The nearby city of Thibodaux was also named for him, tying this quiet corner

of Gray to one of the most familiar names in South Louisiana.

Erected in 1951 by the Louisiana Department of Commerce and Industry, the marker

remains easy to miss unless you know to look for it. But it preserves a story that connects

Gray, Terrebonne Parish, and Thibodaux through one man and one small stretch of Highway 24.



Gray may sit between two larger towns, but it holds a piece of both their beginnings.
