A Lil’ Lagniappe...

In March 1943, photographer John Vachon stopped in Thibodaux and captured this maze of

road signs beside the bridge. From that one spot, travelers were pointed toward

Schriever, Gibson, Vacherie, Raceland, Morgan City, New Orleans, Baton Rouge,

and the Mississippi River. The old route numbers have changed, but the photograph preserves

a time when a hand-painted sign and a mileage were all a driver had to find the next town. 

The scene reflects Thibodaux’s long-standing role as Lafourche Parish’s commercial, service,

and distribution center. Its location on Bayou Lafourche, followed by several railroad connections,

made it a place where goods, people, and routes came together. A 1916 Sanborn map recorded

more than 100 mercantile establishments in Thibodaux, far more than the smaller

trading communities surrounding it. By the time Vachon took this photograph, the city was still

doing what it had done for generations: connecting the bayou to the wider world. 

Some things change. Others, like knowing your way around this part of the bayou, don't.
