Vacherie, LA

Vacherie stretches along both sides of the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, surrounded

by sugarcane fields, working farms, historic properties, and communities shaped by generations

of life along the River Road.

Homes and businesses here face South Louisiana heat, humidity, heavy rain, storms,

and the constant upkeep that comes with living near the river. Whether the project involves

Oak Alley is known around the world for the long row of live oaks leading from the Mississippi

River to the house. The trees were planted before the present mansion was built and

created one of the most recognizable landscapes along Louisiana’s River Road.

The property later became a sugar plantation that depended on the forced labor of

more than one hundred enslaved men, women, and children. Their work extended far

beyond the cane fields and included blacksmithing, carpentry, animal care, cooking,

maintenance, and the many other jobs required to operate the plantation.

Today, Oak Alley is preserved as a historic site that interprets both its architecture and

the lives of the people whose labor sustained it. Its history is beautiful in places, painful

in others, and far too important to reduce to the view beneath the trees.
