Larose, LA

Larose sits where Bayou Lafourche meets the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, a crossroads

that helped shape the community into a center for marine work, boatbuilding, oilfield service,

and everyday life along the bayou. Highway 1 and Highway 308 follow the water through town,

while vessels, equipment, and working crews continue to move through the

Intracoastal just as they have for generations.

Homes and businesses in Larose live close to that working landscape. Storm repairs,

additions, exterior upkeep, docks, sheds, camps, and commercial projects all call for

materials suited to South Louisiana conditions. Frost Lumber is a direct trip north

on Highway 1, carrying lumber, roofing, siding, hardware, paint supplies, and the

building materials needed to keep local property working and standing strong.

Larose has never been simply a pass-through town. It connects upper and lower

Lafourche, the bayou and the Intracoastal, and residential life with the industries

that reach the Gulf. Frost serves that same broad mix of homeowners, contractors,

 tradespeople, and businesses from one well-stocked city block in Thibodaux.

This photograph shows the remains of the motorized sailing vessel Fox, beached along

the east bank of Bayou Lafourche in Larose. The vessel was documented by the

Historic American Engineering Record because it represented an unusual South Louisiana

boat design that may have been the last surviving example of its kind.

Built of cypress by an unidentified New Orleans boatbuilder, the Fox belonged to an era

when wooden vessels carried goods, equipment, and people through Louisiana’s bayous

before modern workboats took their place. Its combination of sail and motor power

reflected a period of transition, when traditional boatbuilding adapted to newer

machinery without immediately abandoning older designs.

Finding the vessel preserved on the bank at Larose was fitting. The town has long stood

where waterways and industries meet, and where boatbuilding evolved from hand-built

wooden craft into the modern marine industry that still defines the area.

The boats changed. Larose never stopped building for the water.
