BUILDING MATERIALS
Grand Isle, LA
Grand Isle is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, a narrow stretch of land where the
Gulf shapes nearly every part of daily life. Fishing, tourism, offshore work, and generations
of family life have all grown around an island that is beautiful, productive, and never easy on a building.
Salt air, wind, water, heat, and storms make material choices matter here. Repairs cannot
always wait, and rebuilding is rarely just cosmetic. Frost Lumber carries the lumber,
roofing, siding, hardware, paint supplies, windows, doors, and other building materials
needed for island homes, camps, businesses, docks, and working property.
The trip from Grand Isle to Thibodaux follows the same bayou corridor island families
have depended on for generations. At Frost, customers can talk through what they are
building or repairing, find materials suited to South Louisiana conditions, and place special
orders when the job calls for something beyond the usual shelf stock.
A Lil’ Lagniappe...
Built around 1870, Valence House is one of the surviving examples of the traditional homes
that once defined Grand Isle. Its design was not decorative for decoration’s sake. The deep
gallery, large attic, heavy braced timbers, and connected interior rooms were practical
answers to heat, wind, storms, and life on a barrier island.
Houses like this were built with the coast in mind. Shade mattered. Airflow mattered.
Strong framing mattered. Every part of the structure had a job long before modern building
codes gave those choices a name.
The Valence House remains a reminder that building on Grand Isle has always
required respect for the place itself.
On Grand Isle, a building has never had the luxury of ignoring where it stands.
