LUMBER & HARDWARE

Chackbay, LA

Just seven miles up Louisiana Highway 20 from Thibodaux, Chackbay sits at the center of a

close-knit stretch of communities that includes Choctaw, Bayou Boeuf, and Kraemer. It is a place of

family property, cane fields, workshops, churches, camps, and homes that are continually being

repaired, expanded, and passed from one generation to the next.

That same sense of community comes alive each October at the Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay,

a tradition that has brought families together for more than 50 years while supporting the Chackbay Volunteer

Fire Department. Frost Lumber is right down the road in Thibodaux, serving Chackbay

and the surrounding communities with lumber, hardware, roofing, siding,

paint supplies, and the materials needed for the work that keeps local homes and property going.

A Lil’ Lagniappe...

This page of The Weekly Thibodaux Sentinel and Journal of the 8th Senatorial District

was printed on June 18, 1892, during an important period in Chackbay’s development.

By then, Acadian families had moved beyond the heavily settled banks of Bayou

Lafourche and onto the higher ridges around Chackbay, where the land was better

suited for farming, particularly sugarcane.

Printed in nearby Thibodaux, the newspaper captures the larger Lafourche

Parish world surrounding Chackbay at the time. Advertisements for merchants,

tradespeople, medicines, legal services, and household goods filled its pages,

preserving the ordinary details of life in a region where rural communities

remained closely connected to the parish seat.

For Chackbay, that connection was both geographic and practical. Families worked

the ridges and cane fields outside town, while Thibodaux provided access to

newspapers, businesses, government, and services only a few miles away.

In Chackbay, history lives in the cane fields, the gumbo pot, and

the families who still call the bayou home.
