BUILDING MATERIALS
Amelia, LA
Amelia is a working community shaped by Bayou Boeuf, the Intracoastal Waterway, and
generations of people who know how to build, repair, and keep things moving. From waterfront
businesses and marine operations to family homes and everyday projects, the work done
here calls for materials that can stand up to South Louisiana conditions.
Frost Lumber serves Amelia with quality lumber, plywood, roofing, siding, hardware,
paint supplies, and other building materials for projects large and small. Our Thibodaux yard is
close enough for the trip and stocked with the essentials, hard-to-find items, and practical
guidance customers may not find at a big-box store.
A Lil’ Lagniappe...
In 1934, folklorists John and Alan Lomax traveled through southern Louisiana recording the voices and
music of people whose stories might otherwise have been lost. In Amelia, Alan Lomax photographed blues
singer and World War I veteran John Bray playfully standing beneath a bridge as though he were holding it up.
During that visit, Bray performed “Trench Blues,” a song he composed about the fear, loss, and
eventual victory experienced by Black soldiers during World War I. Few personal musical accounts of the war by
African American veterans survived, making Bray’s recording an important part of the nation’s folk archive.
The photograph captures more than a playful moment beneath an Amelia bridge. It preserves the face and
personality of a local man whose voice carried a deeply personal story from this small
bayou community into the Library of Congress.
Sometimes the history of a place is preserved not in its buildings, but in the voices of the people who lived there.
